A heartfelt thank you to the Mortal and Strong team for creating the Scars of Gold exhibition, a transformative experience that I was privileged to join as a voice, an artist, and a panelist. Mortal and Strong is a UK-registered charity (1209448) dedicated to supporting people facing life-changing or incurable health conditions. They provide medical-professional-led education and support, using art to empower communities.

My journey with Scars of Gold, which ran in London’s Waterloo from May 10–17, 2025, was deeply personal. As a voice, I shared my story of late diagnosis; as an artist, I contributed to the campaign’s creative vision; and as a panelist, I discussed how art and advocacy merge, particularly through my collaboration with HeartCharged to launch the Sudden Cardiac Art initiative.

The exhibition by Dr. Liz Murray and photographer Sammy Weston, embodied the Japanese art of Kintsugi (repairing broken pottery with gold to celebrate imperfections). 100 black-and-white portraits, each adorned with gold to highlight survivors’ scars, captured the strength of women facing over 160 health conditions.

Scars of Gold wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a movement. Over 100 women shared their experiences through a podcast, documentary and art, supported by artists creating 100 artworks, one for each Voice.

To the Mortal and Strong team, thank you for uniting medical professionals, survivours and artists to create something extraordinary. To HeartCharged, your passion fuels our shared mission!

Want to see how I made my three artworks for the show? Scroll to the bottom of the page for the videos.

To everyone who visited or supported the exhibition, your engagement made it shine. Let’s keep the conversation alive.

How have your scars shaped your story?

Charlie Kirkham on Instagram: "Join me on this emotional journey as I create an oil painting for the ‘Scars of Gold’ exhibition, celebrating Hannah Keime’s survival of sudden cardiac arrest on October 23, 2015. Her implanted ICD saved her life, and this artwork honours her resilience. Inspired by art history’s reclining women and composite photos of Hannah, the painting evolved from a dark backdrop to a dreamy landscape, with the date of her cardiac arrest etched into each layer. Battling proportions was tough: pasting a head onto a torso onto legs took multiple Procreate mockups and sketches. I painted a dummy torso to map out her imaginary outfit, revealing her scar. The blue bikini and baggy pants were fun, but the pants overwhelmed the composition, so I switched to simple shorts to highlight Hannah’s youth and elegance. Through layers, scrapped stages, and tonal harmony, the painting found balance, reflecting Hannah’s strength and beauty 🎨💪 find out more about her story via @heartcharged You can see this painting next month (May) at Sidings, Waterloo as part of ‘Scars of Gold, the Event’ organised by @mortalandstrong Mortal And Strong is a registered charity (No 1209448) for people with life changing/incurable health conditions. Charlie Kirkham on Instagram: "In just a few seconds, here’s the long process behind this self-portrait. It started with a photo reference (thanks @emmahoganphoto !), then moved into the digital drawing stage. From there, I burned the image into leather. The two ECG waves are 24-average asymptomatic readings—cutting out arrhythmic episodes in the first one—showing how treatment has changed my heart, even in sinus rhythm. After the burn, I stitched the leathers, scratched into them, and finally embossed them with lines from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The surface hides and reveals its secrets depending on the angle—burn marks and embossing shifting in and out of view. #ecg #leatherartist #mixedmediaart #mortalandstrong #charliekirkham #britishartist #selfportrait #heartwarrior"
